The Gallery was established by Hugh Lane in 1908. Believed to be the first gallery of modern art in the world, it houses one of Ireland's most impressive collections of modern and contemporary art. Among its recent acquisitions is Francis Bacon's Studio and seven of his unfinished paintings, a collection of paintings presented by internationally renowned painter Sean Scully and significant representations of contemporary Irish art practice.
