The IYPE runs from January 2007 to December 2009, with the central year of the triennium, with 2008 been proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as the UN Year. The IYPE was initiated jointly by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) with the aim to ensure greater and more effective use by society of the knowledge accumulated by the world's Earth scientists.
