The year 2008 is a very meaningful year that marks the 100th anniversary of the Salvation Army’s entry into Korea.
The Salvation Army was created in 1865 by William Booth, a Methodist pastor at a church in a London slum that preached and took care of the wounded and poor who were shunned by the rich churches at the time. The Salvation Army, which epitomizes “the army of God,” operates a variety of social welfare programs: it provides the general public shattered by poverty with not only spiritual services but also food, jobs and a place to rest. In Korea, the Salvation Army started in 1908, when the Salvation Army officer Robert Hoggard from England was appointed as the officer in charge of Korea.
