Historical sources show that care of the body played a major role in upbringing even in days gone by and was specifically aimed at men and young boys. This attitude was also reflected in the educational system on the Faroe Islands. At the beginning of the 20th century a close eye was kept on what was happening in the rest of the world, and this went for interest in sport too. Improved circumstances led to some young boys from Tórshavn with an interest in gymnastics setting up a club in 1901. The club was called “Thorshavns Gymnastikforening Fimur” and held a display that same year. It was not until 1906, however, that the real work began in the area of voluntary sport after these boys had asked Jógvan Waagstein to be their leader. That year they held a display involving 15 gymnasts. By 1909 there were three gymnastics squads and the “Torshavns Gymnastikforening” gymnastics club was established. To begin with training took place in the gymnasium of the old secondary school. There was no apparatus there, but the gymnastics club took care of that. The apparatus involved was the box, horse, rings and mat.
